Munich


     Munich is considered to be the third city of Germany according to its growth. It is located near Alps mountain chain on the banks of the Isar river. Munich is the capital of Bayern.

     Officially, it is stated that Munich was  founded by the duke Henry the  Lion in 1158. In 1180 the  power over the city moved to the Wittelsbach dynasty. Only  in the year 1505 Munich became Bavarian capital. The events of the first half  of the 17th century made the period of its blossoming go to the end. The thirty –year  war (1618-1648 years) and the epidemic of plague led to the death of the one third of the town. At the beginning of the 18th century  the Bayern acquires the status of the Kingdom.

     The historical center of the city is considered to be Altshtadt area(Altstadt, the Old town), according to the length of its borders it’s nearly equal to  the fortress walls, that have surrounded Munich some time ago. Since then  several gates have survived till now , and are standing  at the opposite sides of the Old town.

     The heart of the Old town  is Marienplatz, which got its name  due to the column  with the statue of St. Maria, who is the patroness of Bayern. Here there’s one more symbol of the town- the New  town-hall, the noble building, decorated with fine moulding  and statuettes. On the eastern part of  the square there is  the Old  town-hall. 

     Munich has a lot of places of interests, among them: King square, King’s residence complex, Nymphenburg palace, Schleissheim palace, Frauenkirche Cathedral.

     In spite of  quite compact development, Munich is famous for its parks, squares and places of rest. Among them the most famous are: English Garden, Olympia park, botanical garden.

      Munich is a city of museums. There is an exhibiting  center “world BMW” and museum of BMW, Old Pinakothek, New Pinakothek, The Schackgalerie, the city collection of graphics, the city collection of Egyptian art, the city collection of coins, The German museum. 



 

     Munich is famous all over the world due to its brewing traditions. 6 big breweries, which provide the world-famous holiday, Oktoberfest, with beer. Oktoberfest is the holiday of  beer, Pretzel,  fried chicken and merry-go-round, which is celebrated annually at the beginning of October on the Teresian field.

 

 

    It is possible to travel from Munich to the following places:

  • King’s Palaces: Neuschwanstein, Hohenschwangau, Linderhof, Herrenchiemsee
  • Alps to do mountain skiing Mittenwald, Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  • The lakes: Tegernsee, Chiemsee, Königssee
  •  To the towns of: Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Augsburg, Ulm, Passau, Regensburg, Bamberg, Nuremberg, Oberammergau
  •  The Andechs Monastery 
  •  The Hitler’s residence “ Eagle’s nest”

     Transport system. Munich and its outskirts are divided into 4 parts. “Innenraum” includes the city, “XXL” is added with the  nearest places, including  Furth and Dachau. “Ausenraum”  goes to such places as airport, and far outskirts. The railway station  Hauptbahnhof is one of the most important dots on the transport map of the city, 4 undeground lines and 6 country trains lead to it, not telling a word about roots upper transport. From the railway station start their way trains that circulate all over Europe, it is possible to get to such cities as  Vienna, Zurich, Geneva, Milan, Venice. Munich has underground, tram, bus  and country train. The underground system has 8 lines, which are united with country trains. The lines cross each other in the middle  near the main railway station.-this is the main transfer station. The metro stations are located in 4 floors. On the each level of cross-meeting there is  a transfer station. The interval between trains is 15 minutes.

     The airport of Munich is called Franz-Josef-Strauss-Flughaven. It is located 30 km from the city. This is the 7th airport in Europe according  to its volume of passenger transporting. Every 20 minute a speed train is circulating in the airport, the lines and stations of which  are painted on the map of the city  by green circle with S in the middle. The trip from the airport to the city center takes approximately 45 minutes Flughafen station is situated  nearby Terminal 1 and 2.

 

     The route busses drive to the airport since 6.50 a.m. till 19.50 p.m. every 20 minutes. Various busses link the airport with the nearest cities. The bus station  is situated in front of the central part near the Terminals 1 and 2. Other bus stops: Vacationers parking lot (P41); Visitors Park, Terminal 1 Module A/B, Terminal 2.
